Henry and the Nightcralwers, Kate Morgan Band and Spotlight Carnival rock the Chevrolet Stage
Being the final Saturday of the TWSSF, the village was already packed by the time Henry and the Nightcrawlers took to the Chevrolet Stage shortly after noon. A Vancouver four-piece comprised of the same members as the Zolas (who played at the fashion show the night before), the band played a short, snappy selection of upbeat guitar pop tunes.
The highlight of the performance was the set-closing "The New Guy," a plea to an ex-girlfriend that was melancholic despite its chirpy melody and major key bounce. Finding the middle ground between Elvis Costello's bilious wit and Weezer's hapless nerd rock, the song finished with an ironically-placed interpolation of Tom Cochrane's schlock rocking "Life Is a Highway."
Up next was the Kate Morgan Band, who performed while visual artists Liks and Josee St. Amour painted white Camaro hoods just beside the stage. Despite being just sixteen, Morgan's voice is clear and strong, with just a hint of smokey soulfulness. This, as well as her folk pop songwriting, is undeniably pretty, and she went over well with the crowd of families gathered in the Village Square.
Most of the set was comprised of breezy pop rock, but the best song of the bunch was a charming doo-wop knockoff, which featured endearing, silly-but-sweet lyrics along the lines of "1, 2, 3, 4 / I love you more." (Sound familiar?)
As the snowboarding crowd came down off the mountain and got their evenings underway, Vancouver's Spotlight Carnival closed out the day with an array of dramatic slow-burners and shimmering, arena-sized rockouts. The band members were clearly Brit rock aficionados, their jangling guitars and echo-laden ambience bearing trances of everyone from the Smiths to Coldplay to Doves.
Still, they weren't blinded by their Anglophilia: they also played covers of Interpol's "PDA" and Tokyo Police Club's "In a Cave," both of which fit in so seamlessly with the band's oeuvre that most onlookers probably wouldn't have known they weren't originals had guitarist Cole MacKinnon not admitted it.
If you missed it, don't fret: both Henry and the Nightcrawlers and Spotlight Carnival will be returning to the Main Stage tomorrow at 12:15 and 5:15, respectively. Also, a little bird told me that We Are the City might be showing up during Henry and the Nightcrawlers set, so be sure to check that out.
